Most cat furniture is designed to be tolerated rather than admired: beige carpet, grey sisal, a shape best hidden behind the sofa. Happy & Polly takes the opposite view. The cat supplies brand, run by Parmedu Co., Limited, makes cat trees shaped like ice creams and mushrooms, ceramic bowls with polka dots, and tofu litter in a bright green bucket. Are Happy & Polly cat trees worth the price?
The range runs from compact to statement pieces. The 28-inch Moonlight Cottage Cat Tree, a purple design for kittens and small cats with a hideaway, sisal post and dangling moon and star toys, is listed at $69.99. The 63-inch Ice Cream Multi-Level Cat Tree costs $139.99 and adds a crown-shaped top perch, a hanging basket, a cookie-shaped condo and a built-in grooming brush on a 60cm footprint. At the top end, the 71-inch Fruit World Multi-Cat Tree is $199.99 and the Magic Mushroom Cat Tree $239.99.
Be clear about what you are paying for. Most of these trees use particleboard frames with plush or sherpa covers, the same basic construction as cheaper trees, so the premium is largely for design. If you want something sturdier, the 35.4-inch Blossom Wonder is listed as solid wood at $219.99. Delivery estimates also vary: the Ice Cream tree shows two to three weeks, and the Moonlight Cottage is marked as available only in the United States.
How good is Happy & Polly tofu cat litter?
Litter is the brand’s everyday product, and it is more affordable. The Clumping Natural Tofu Cat Litter is made from pea fibre and corn starch with 2% baking soda, and costs $14.99 for a 5.5lb bag or $57.99 for a 20lb bucket. The newer Tofu & Cassava Natural Cat Litter is unscented and has fine granules designed for automatic, self-cleaning boxes such as the Litter-Robot. It starts at $15.99 a bag, with the bucket also at $57.99.
Plant-based litters like these are lighter than clay and clump well, though tofu can turn soft if left too long between scoops. The original tofu litter is sold as flushable in small amounts. In practice, many UK water companies ask people not to flush cat litter, and cat waste can carry parasites, so the bin or compost bin is the safer choice. A subscription option is available for regular buyers.
What about bowls, fountains and toys?
The ceramics are among the most appealing products. The 3.4oz Mushroom Picnic Ceramic Cat Bowl ($29.99) has a 15-degree tilt and a raised base, and is dishwasher and microwave safe. Its matching 30oz Mushroom Picnic Ceramic Cat Water Fountain costs $49.99 and runs at under 30 decibels. Note the upkeep: the brand recommends cleaning it weekly and replacing the filter about once a month, so factor in spare filters. Toys and scratchers follow the same playful approach. The Sweetheart Snuggle Cat Tunnel is $29.99, or $39.99 with a round bed on top, but shows a four to six week delivery estimate. Cardboard scratchers range from $19.99 for the Living Canvas to $59.99 for the book-shaped Midnight Grimoire. For outings there is a foldable pet stroller with a detachable carrier at $134.99, rated for cats up to 26.5lb.
What should UK buyers know before ordering?
Happy & Polly is US-focused. Prices are in US or Canadian dollars only, and many products had no customer reviews on the site when we checked. Standard shipping is free over US$19, but international orders take around 12 to 20 business days. Import duties and taxes are the buyer’s responsibility, and the shipping policy says oversized items such as cat trees can only be sent to some areas of the US, Australia and the UK. Check your postcode at checkout before choosing a cat tree.
Returns are accepted within 30 days, but you must contact customer service first, items must be unused and in their original packaging, and neither the original nor the return shipping is refunded. Custom and clearance items cannot be returned. Sending a large cat tree back overseas could cost more than it is worth.
